Sustainability Focus

Today is Earth Day 2021. A timely reminder that we only have one planet and it is up to us to look after it. Here at Concept Hand Tufting we are constantly working to improve our environmental credentials. We are striving to only use natural and sustainable materials, such as wool, silk, bamboo, linen and jute. Rugs are produced with cotton and natural latex backing and, as everything is made to order and most products are made to exact size and shape, there is minimal wastage. When it comes to packaging we keep it to a minimum. We also use cardboard and wood, wherever possible, so that it can be more easily recycled or biodegrade. We believe that you don't have to compromise on design, style or luxury by choosing a sustainable option. And, as always, are happy to dedicate our time and services to finding the best solution for your project, meeting both aesthetic and green credentials. Below are some examples of beautiful, sustainable choices though, of course, the possibilities are endless when it comes to bespoke rugs. We'd like to see a shift towards everyone making more informed choices about the materials they use in their homes so…

Planning for the future

We’re very excited to announce the arrival of a new recruit to Concept Hand Tufting.  Charles’ daughter, Ellie Lean, has joined us this week, initially as Sales and Marketing Director, but with the long term goal of taking over running the business. Those of you who have worked with us for over 10 years will remember that Ellie (then Ellie Lawton) worked at Concept Hand Tufting in sales for 3 years in the late 2000s. Since then she has worked as an Account Manager in a PR agency and, for the last 7 years, has been running an independent bakery with her husband, Matt. Managing Director, Charles said, “Despite the unique and challenging times that 2020 have brought, we are as busy as ever at Concept and we’re thrilled to be able to start planning for the succession of the business. We have no doubt that, under the new management, Concept will continue to grow and thrive for many years to come.” As a fifth generation textile business director, Ellie is excited to be back in the world of carpets. “My great-great grandfather opened a yarn-spinning business with his son Frank in Huddersfield in 1902. Fred Lawton & Son Ltd…

Virtual Design Consulations

Design studio visits, face to face creative thinking and working with such an array of design styles and projects is our passion. This way of working, as for many, has been set aside to make way for the new normal. We have been working successfully with a number of design professionals here in the UK and overseas throughout this global crisis. Adopting new ways to communicate creatively and efficiently, we are now offering virtual design meetings to discuss your ongoing projects, new enquiries or to view our latest house collection. From taking a design brief, consulting on colours with fabric and finish samples, to producing a considered rug story presentation for digital issue. With our in-house design team, wealth of knowledge and interior design experience we are well placed to advise on design options to work in harmony with your creative vision. Our keen eye for colour, superior quality artwork and fine sampling result in some truly spectacular results.

Hand Tufting

A lot of our clients aren’t fully aware of what hand tufting means so we thought we would explain! Hand tufting is the process of tufting the yarn through the carpet or rug backing. Firstly our pure cotton carpet canvas is measured and then the design is either screen printed or digitally printed on to this like a piece of artwork. The benefit of the modern printed version is both accuracy and complexity. Each area of the design is individually hand tufted using a small hand held gun which shoots the yarn through from the back to the front of the rug or carpet. This is an extremely lengthy process as each colour or fibre is tufted separately. Our talented production teams have to be steady handed and exceptionally precise down to a fraction of a millimetre. It can take years of experience to become a high grade hand tufter. Once the entire design has been hand tufted, the unfinished piece is laid out and then a natural latex is applied to the reverse of the piece. This locks each yarn into canvas to create a stable surface. The carpet is then sheared or carved by hand if required and…

Lawton Yarns

We were thrilled and honoured that Lawton Yarns asked Concept’s company director Charles to open their new showroom last month.   Charles Lawton at the Grand Opening   The showroom, a space designed and curated by Joanna Ramsden, has been created to promote the natural benefits of wool and celebrate the heritage behind Lawton Yarns. Cleaning

Today we are going to talk about cleaning carpets, not the most glamorous subject but something we often get asked about. There are various options and techniques depending on which fibre your carpet is made from. We now have the option to add Stain Resist to the yarn during the dyeing process. This is the most effective way of protecting bamboo and silk in particular as it coats the outside of the yarn and therefore completely protects the yarn, unlike spray systems which are added after the carpet is produced and effectively only cover the surface of the the carpet with little penetration down the yarn tufts towards the backing. The Stain Resist system prevents spillages from entering the yarn as it is coated with a polymer coating. The end-user therefor has time to blot up the spillage and remove it entirely. Of course this should be done as soon as possible after the spillage, as over time, the liquid will find it’s way down the outside of the yarn to the the base of the carpet where it is much more difficult to lift out and may eventually stain the backing. This process does not effect the look or…
