A lot of our clients aren’t fully aware of what hand tufting means so we thoughts we’d explain! Hand tufting is the process of tufting the yarn through the carpet or rug backing.
Firstly the carpet backing is hung and the design is drawn on to it by hand like a piece of artwork or it can also sometimes be projected on to the backing. Then each area of the design is individually hand tufted using a small hand held gun which shoots the yarn through from the back to the front of the rug or carpet.
This is an extremely lengthy process as each colour or fibre is tufted separately. Our talented production teams have to be steady handed and exceptionally precise down to a fraction of a millimetre.
Once the entire design has been hand tufted, the yarn is then sheared or carved by hand if required and lastly the backing is added for a clean professional finish.
Our lead time is 12 weeks for most bespoke custom made rugs and carpets, this is due to the nature of hand tufting and the lengthy process involved. Before the hand tufting process even beings, the yarn is dyed to match the exact colour required, hung and dried and then wrapped ready for use.
